ENHANCE Gender Equity in Training

Employee training is often seen as gender neutral. The thinking is that if we ignore sex and gender, and treat everybody the same, a training is gender equitable and inclusive.
Typical examples of the employee training programmes that are referred to are:

  • sales training
  • marketing training
  • communication training
  • management training

However, extensive academic research, including my own, highlights the many ways in which sex/gender impacts training and training outcome.

Ignoring sex/gender means that training may not only maintain, but also create sex/gender inequity.

To ensure training is gender inclusive and equitable:

  1. a gender-neutral approach to training is not good enough
  2. the role of sex/gender in training and learning needs to be recognized and addressed
  3. gender sensitive training approaches are required
